FASTING, NOT JUST FOR TROUBLES

Luke 2:37

and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

Many Christians have this distorted view about fasting. They believe that Christians only have to fast when they have a dire need, or when they are in some sort of trouble. This mentality is so wrong and ungodly. It's the same mentality that makes people have a prayerless life, and only remember God when they fall into some trouble or attack.

God does not intend that we function this way. He doesn't even want us to keep expecting to fall into trouble, or to be down with some problems, no! That's not His mind for us. We must not wait until there's a big problem or a huge trouble around before we remember fasting.

Such fasting may even be ineffective in the now. We must have fasting as our lifestyle, just as we have prayers and the Word. We should fast often, creating those focused periods for God and God alone. Fasting should be a part of our lives. It's not difficult because we have the Holy Spirit.

If you genuinely occupy yourself with God, during a fasting period, you will not really feel the impact of the fast on your body as such. Don't live a fast where you must get into trouble before you fast. Just have a regular plan, or schedule or consciousness of fasting. You can choose a day weekly or more, and focus inwardly on God. It boosts growth, and helps you receive from God better than when you are cumbered with distractions. You're blessed. -TCF .
