THE PERSONHOOD OF JESUS CHRIST

 The Personhood Of Jesus Christ

We must have heard of the word “Holy Trinity”. The word trinity comes from “tri” meaning “three” and “unity” meaning

“one”. God is 3 distinct individuals - God the father, the son Jesus and the Holy Spirit- in one true God. But this session, we will focus on the Personhood Of Jesus Christ.

Who is Jesus Christ?

To tell you but a few:

- He is the son of the Most High God: Matthew 3:17 “And a voice from Heaven said “this is my beloved son.. whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

- Jesus is the word made flesh: John 1:14 “the word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, we have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only son, who came from the father , full of grace and truth.”

- Jesus is God and God is Jesus: John 10:30 “I and the father are one.”

What does Jesus do???

  • Jesus makes it very possible for us to go to God: Jesus is our representative in heaven, the one who is seated at the right hand of the Father, interceding on our behalf. As seen in Hebrews 12:18-22. In summary, we are told there that we do not live in the days of the Old Testament anymore where Moses has to go up to the mountain to talk to God Himself and because of how mighty and glorious God is, there was fear in Moses and in the people.. such that animals could not even come close to the mountain if not they died. But we have Jesus who introduced to us the new covenant.. in Hebrews He is called the “mediator” of a new covenant and his sprinkled blood speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. Jesus gives us a better way of reconciling with God. His blood that was shed on the cross for our sins speaks on our behalf.

  • We go to Jesus in prayer as we pray in his name and he echoes Amen to our prayers and takes them to the Father. John 16:23 “Jesus tells the apostles.. Amen amen I say to you, whatever you ask from the Father, He will give it to you in my name.”
  • For us to get to God we need Jesus:

John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one cometh unto the Father but by me” so it is clear that Jesus makes it possible for us to go to and get to know the Father, because we know God through his son.. with the help of the Holy Spirit ( but this is a topic for another day)

  • Jesus possesses all the characteristics and attributes of God and makes us see/feel and believe it: Colossians 2:9 “for in Christ all the fullness of the deity lives in bodily form”. What are these attributes/characteristics?
  • Jesus is love as God is love: 1 John 4:7-8
  • Jesus is forgiving as God is ever merciful. Luke 23:34 “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
  • Jesus is humble: John 13:5
  • Jesus is compassionate: Luke 7:13 “when the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said don’t cry”
  • Jesus is gentle
  • Self control: John 16:33 where he showed self control despite being tempted by the devil and with all the tribulations and sufferings he faced while in the world, he remained winless and perfect.

There is so much to know and learn about our savior Jesus Christ but to know him fully and understand his person.. we need to follow him daily and this act of following Jesus is not a one day thing, as seen in Luke 9: 22 where he told his disciples that to follow him, they must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow him.

How can we do it? Because we are humans and we are in a world that does the opposite of God’s word. To follow Jesus daily.. we need the Holy Spirit. We need a close fellowship with the person of the Holy Spirit and this will be our next topic.

Jesus calls out to us everyday.. He chases after us with his love John 15:16 “you did not choose me.. I chose you and appointed you”

But we won’t know or understand any of these until we understand who He is and Who the Holy Spirit is.

Thank you and God bless you.
