IMPLICATION OF A NEW NAME

Genesis 17:5

Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

Physically, names are simply a means of identification for a person. Spiritually however, names are more than just a means of identification. A name in the spiritual realm defines a thing, and describes it's functionality, as well as all that concern that thing. In the spiritual realm, names are sensitive because they confer authority or take authority. Names are a blessing or a curse.

The name of a being in the spiritual realm literally defines who that being is and how he functions. Many times, when God wants to bless a man, He changes his name, and gives Him a name which confers on Him the blessings God desires for such a person.

The implication of a new name is that whatever blessings the new name conveys or carries takes effect from the very moment the name is given, irrespective of the physical situation of the name's bearer. 'Abram' didn't have any legitimate son yet, but God said your name shall be called Abraham, for I have made you a Father of many nations.

Notice that God didn't say "I will make you." That would've been understandable. He said "I have made you a Father of many nations", to a man who didn't have one single legitimate child. Simply because He changed his name? What really is the power of names? From the moment a new name is conferred on a man, the realities of the name take effect immediately irrespective of the physical condition of that man.
