THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD
For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.) Romans 5:17
The righteousness of God is the character and nature of God to be right and right only and always. It is the reason His judgment and acts are always just. Because God does not just live righteously; He is righteousness.
He is the definition of righteousness, and the depth of this definition is revealed in the gospel. Apostle Paul says, I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ… For in it, the righteousness of God is revealed (Romans 1:6-7). Through the gospel, we get to understand what and who righteousness is.
The same nature of righteousness is the nature the new creation in Christ takes up at salvation. This is a free gift, that can never be attained by any amount of work or effort. It is unattainable by efforts and must be accepted effortlessly by faith. The gift of righteousness is the reason the believer hates to do evil and loves to do good.
This is because his nature is consistent with the life of God. Since this is a gift, a believer who is mature, cannot be more righteous than a newborn babe in Christ; but he would have learned to give expression consistently to his inherent Christ nature of righteousness. The righteousness of God is God's gift to us, by God's life in us. You are blessed. TCF.
