1 Timothy 4:8

For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.

Some Christians think that godliness is a special gift of God to certain people. So they go thinking “If only I can be as godly or as spiritually serious as this fellow.” Some others think that godliness or maturity will just come on it’s own to them, or that it’s God’s duty to do. These thought patterns are wrong.

Having been born again , we have the responsibility to work out in spiritual things, exercising ourselves unto godliness. We should train ourselves to be godly. It wouldn’t just happen automatically, and it’s not just for a few special people.

Just as people are intentional about their physical exercise, even when they are tired or not feeling like it, because they want to be fit, they bring their bodies under subjection to their mind. You must also bring your mind under subjection to your re-created spirit.

You must work out spiritually, exercising and training your mind and by extension your body to be subject to the Lordship of the Word and the Spirit within you. Don’t just live by how you feel at times. If you must work out your salvation, then you must exercise yourself towards godliness. Exercise Authority over your mind and body by constantly practicing the word and following the Spirit even when you don’t feel like it. That’s how maturity is attained. You are blessed. TCF
