daily devotional: The shield of faith

Ephesians 6:16

Above all, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts (arrows) of the wicked one (the devil). The shield of faith. Faith, a shield? To understand why faith is described as a shield and to understand how to take faith up, we'd need to properly understand the meaning of faith. In simplest words, faith is simply believing what you know about God. Trusting and putting your confidence in God, based on the knowledge you have about Him. You see, faith has a lot to do with knowledge of God. Because if you don't know anything about Him, then there's nothing to believe or disbelieve. Only when you knew God can save, then you could believe it or not. If you believed it, that's faith. When you confessed what you believed it became operational. You now see why you got saved when you believed with your heart that Jesus is the Son of God and He died for you and resurrected again, and confessed with your mouth that He's Lord of your life (Rom. 10:9-10).

You first received information about His saving grace and power, through the Word. The grace of God was available (and is always available) to help you believe (Titus 2:11). When you believed you were ready to be saved. When you confessed your belief, you got saved. So faith was your belief in the knowledge of His saving power, and the working of your faith was in the confession of your mouth. So when you trust, when you believe in something you know about God, that's faith. Now when you confess your faith (that which you believe), you've taken it up, like a shield. It becomes operational. So the working, the operation, the taking up of your faith, lies in the declaration, the confession of what knowledge you have believed in God or about God. There's a lot we'll discuss on faith and how to take it up like a shield, but this introduction is very necessary. We'll continue tomorrow. Remain blessed. -TCF
